What is it?

Marketing...The process of getting your customer to buy your product and coming back for more... Are you interested in marketing ? If you plan on making any money you had better be interested. Marketing is made up of many skills, most can be learned with enough effort and time. Marketing is used in offline and online businesses alike. It is just applied a little differently in some cases on the Internet.


Here are a few questions to ask yourself...

  • What are you GOOD at, and like to do?

    This may point you to your product. The 2nd part is what will keep you going in tough times; when the money isn't pouring in. Ideas come easier with something your familiar doing. Below is a free ebook to help generate ideas.

  • Who will pay you for your product or service?

    Go to forums, discussion groups, bulletin boards; find what they are asking for. Compile a list of questions and suggestions for new products then create a pareto list(most to least). Try to incorporate their wants into your product, or create a new one.
    Don't be afraid to ask. Take notes. Find solutions.

    You may need to do some research to determine how much your competitors are charging. They probably have a feel for the market.
    It has been said, that you want to find an area without competition. This probably isn't the truth, If there is competition, it means a market exists. Find what's lacking in the offerd products and fill that need.

    It doesn't do any good to have a product, if it doesn't sell.
  • Is there a market in your area of expertise ?


    Do some searching, see if, anyone else is selling a similar product. If, there are some, that's OK. It indicates there is a market for your product. If there are millions, it will be more difficult to break in to the market. Look for areas that has competition but doesn't saturate the market. This takes some work on your part, but most of it is available on the internet. It also makes it easier to keep working when things slow down and they always will if you do the same thing.

  • How much competition in your area of expertise ?

    Competition isn't all bad, it just means you have to find your niche, and there is a market for it. Try to find a specific area of the overall market and maybe get more specific in your offering. What can you offer that no one else does? Can you improve others products? Look for ways to create something of value for your customers. If you can't find anything; look somewhere else.

  • Do you have a unique selling point ?

    Study your competition, see what they are offering. What are their selling points, what can your product accomplish theirs can't? Take notes. Keep track of the benefits for your customer.What is different about your product that makes it stand out and gives something of value. It's this uniquness that will make a stronger selling point and grab some sales.
  • How do you plan to profit from your market?

    Check out your competition see what they are getting for their products. Find your breakeven point. Determine what you need to do, to make a profit. It doesn't do any good to create a product that no one wants, or is willing to pay for. Will this help you reach your goals? You did write down your goals, didn't you? They should help you in determining whether your product will create a profit or not.

  • Have you actually gone through the steps necessary to accomplish your task?

    These are necessary steps and must be accomplished if you plan to be successful. There is no magic bullet to being successful on the internet, just a lot work to get started. Once you learn to be successful; it gets easier. Like most other endeavors, the more you practice, the easier it looks and becomes. There is no substitute for getting busy, and working to achieve your goals. The more you succeed the more confidence you will ahve in yourself.
